Kenya School of TVET (KSTVET), in partnership with CICan through KBEST 10 and the Kenya Forest Service via the Kenya Forestry College, Londiani successfully upskilled 34 trainers (25 from Kenya Forestry College and 9 from Godoma TTI, Muyeye VTC, and Mapimo VTC) on Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) Delivery Methodologies.
The two-week training (that started on 7th of July and concluded on 18th July), combined online and face-to-face sessions, with the first week conducted virtually and the second week held at Kenya Forestry College in Londiani, Kericho County. The programme covered critical areas such as CBET principles, curriculum design, inclusivity, session planning, active learning strategies, conducting CBET assessments, and designing assessment tools.
The KSTVET team was led by Dr. Edwin Tarno, Chief Executive Officer of KSTVET, supported by an exceptional team of facilitators—Lillian, Lynah, Daniel, and Shadrack—with coordination by Milka. The sessions were highly interactive and concluded with the traditional microteaching exercise, allowing participants to apply the concepts they had learned.
Trainers expressed their appreciation for the training, noting the wealth of tools and strategies shared, which they believe will reinvigorate their teaching practices. They looked forward to applying these techniques to enhance learner engagement and improve training outcomes.
During the closing ceremony, Dr. Edwin Tarno, who also served as the event’s Chief Guest, urged participants to continuously expand their competence, particularly in emerging areas such as Artificial Intelligence. “By facilitating rather than simply teaching, trainers can empower learners to grow independently and become innovators for a better society,” he emphasized. He further noted that with the abundance of resources available to learners today, trainers must focus on cultivating learner-centred environments and prioritizing task performance rather than delivering lectures or sharing information learners can already access through tools like ChatGPT. Dr. Tarno also highlighted that KSTVET offers several other CPD programmes, including Integration of AI in Training for TVET Practitioners.
The College Chief Principal, Mr. Francis Musyimi, congratulated the trainees on the successful completion of the programme and expressed gratitude to KSTVET for the fruitful collaboration. He noted that similar training initiatives would be prioritized in the future to keep pace with the dynamic education sector.
Participants were commended for their commitment to continuous learning and professional development. As knowledge bearers, they were reminded of their duty to pass on the training with honesty, diligence, and integrity to prepare a better future generation.
After the graduation ceremony, guests, trainees, and facilitators planted trees to commemorate the occasion and contribute to the national #15BillionTreesInitiative. #homeoftechnicaleducation
