Directorate of Research, Innovation and Extension Services

The Directorate of Research, Innovation and Extension Services at the Kenya School of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (KSTVET) is mandated to drive the School’s research agenda, foster innovation, strengthen industry linkages, and coordinate extension and consultancy services. The Directorate plays a strategic role in promoting knowledge generation, technology transfer, and industry collaboration in support of national development priorities and the advancement of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).

 

Core Functions

The Directorate is responsible for:
  1. Spearheading the planning, design, and development of research proposals aligned with institutional priorities and national development goals.
  2. Overseeing the collection, analysis, and interpretation of research data to ensure accuracy, relevance, and impact.
  3. Coordinating research activities and the preparation and dissemination of research reports.
  4. Preparing periodic reports on the status and progress of research within the institution.
  5. Overseeing tracer studies to assess graduate outcomes and inform curriculum and training improvements.
  6. Developing and managing comprehensive research databases for effective knowledge management and decision-making.
  7. Facilitating the establishment and strengthening of research linkages between the institution and industry.
  8. Ensuring quality assurance in all research, innovation, and extension activities within the Directorate.
  9. Establishing and maintaining partnerships and collaborations with industry, government agencies, and development partners.
  10. Overseeing consultancy services to ensure professional, high-quality delivery aligned with institutional standards.
  11. Leading innovation initiatives and promoting technology transfer between the institution and industry.
  12. Coordinating industrial attachments, apprenticeships, and workplace-based training programmes for trainers.
  13. Maintaining and updating databases of industry partners and collaborators.
  14. Overseeing the planning and implementation of extension services to support community and industry engagement.
  15. Coordinating monitoring and evaluation of partnerships and projects, including preparation of reports and recommendations for policy and operational improvement.
  16. Promoting a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship among staff and trainees.
  17. Overseeing the establishment and management of innovation hubs and incubation centres.
  18. Supporting staff and trainee innovation projects from conception to implementation.
  19. Identifying and pursuing research funding opportunities from local and international sources.
  20. Managing research grants and ensuring compliance with funding requirements and institutional policies.
  21. Overseeing the execution of consultancy projects to ensure quality, timeliness, and impact.
  22. Performing any other functions incidental or consequential to the institution’s mandate under Legal Notice No. 123 of 2022, the State Corporations Act, and any other applicable laws, as may be assigned by the Principal/CEO.
